Major Indian automakers have always felt that this is the segment that can inflate sales volume and finally allow them a solid foundation for the future. Indian auto giants Maruti Suzuki and Tata are the current leaders in this segment but there has been tough competition from new entrants like Volkswagen Group, Honda, Chevrolet and Hyundai to name a few. In terms of comfort, value for money, design and features, the small car segment has seen a lot of improvements. This has also created a whole new segment of small cars called luxury hatchback segment and it has been well received by Indians.

This ever-increasing demand for small cars has also caused the companies to overcharge with not only bringing newer models into the Indian small car market, but also constantly considering upgrading their existing fleet in the market. Experts believe that this sector in India is booming and is set to rise further. Not only are current automakers constantly thinking of giving it their all, but also manufacturers and luxury sedans have dived into the segment.

There were only Maruti Suzuki, Tata and Hyundai in this segment earlier but apart from those, every other automaker in India has cars for this segment. Some of the best selling cars in this segment are Maruti Alto, Maruti Swift, Tata Indica, Hyundai i10 and i20. The new entrants have also created a sensation with their competitive pricing and additional features. Some of the cars that have recently joined this category are the Volkswagen Polo, Ford Figo, Honda Jazz, Toyota Aetos, and Chevrolet Beat. All of these cars were great in their own rights and they kept each other cool. Having such tough competition is always good for customers. The Indian small car market continues to be flooded with small cars and fortunately there are buyers too.

The new vehicle being launched in this segment has features like anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution, airbags and many other features that were not there before. Maruti is the leader in the Indian automobile market followed by Hyundai which has cars to rival Maruti in every segment that it caters to. The auto market in India is going through a phase where auto manufacturers are constantly innovating and being aggressive when it comes to launching new cars so as to outpace each other in satisfying the Indian customer. And from the point of view of the consumer, it is no longer a matter of monotony and choosing a traditional car. Indians now love to experiment and are willing to go for the best without having to compromise due to financial constraints.

Compact cars in India have a huge presence in the market and continue to grow like never before.
